Department of Soil Science

Department of Soil Science was established in 1978 under NEHU. Earlier it was named as Department of Agricultural Chemistry and Soil Science. At present, Department is offering courses for graduate, post graduate and Ph. D degree programmes. Besides teaching, Department is actively engaged in research and extension activities with a clear vision to uplift the farming community of Nagaland with its main focus on soil fertility, soil health and crop production.


Vision:

To nurture, imbibe knowledge and develop strong vision to excel individually as well as impart it towards sustainable agriculture through judicious use of natural resources.


Mission:

To impart excellent concept to the students on management of natural resources, basic principles and fundamentals of soil science.
To develop deep understanding and insightson interrelations among soil quality and plant nutrition.
To put these knowledge into practice for judicious resource management towards sustainable soil health and crop productivity.

Thrust Areas:

  • Improving nutrient use efficiency through proper recommended dose of fertilizers on major crops grown in Nagaland
  • Reclamation of acid soils and restoring degraded soils
  • Preparation of various composts using locally available farm and forest wastes
  • District wise soil fertility mapping, soil testing and distribution of soil health card
  • Enhancing skills and livelihood among farmers through trainings and demonstrations
  • Undertaking various projects with special emphasis on soil health, crop productivity and income generation for the marginal farmers
