The department started as the Department of Agriculture Botany and Plant breeding in 1978 under North Eastern Hill University with the responsibility of teaching core courses in Agricultural Botany and Genetics and Plant Breeding to PU (Ag) and B Sc. (Ag) students. Later on elective course was also started in Plant Breeding.

The department was renamed to Genetics and Plant Breeding in the year 2000, and the Courses offered in the department are B.Sc. (Ag), M.Sc. (Ag) to the students majoring in Genetics and Plant Breeding, and Ph.D. programmed in concerned and allied/cognate subjects. With the introduction of the new syllabus in the B Sc. (Ag) Course the department has been given the additional responsibility of teaching extra courses of Crop physiology, Biotechnology and Environmental Sciences and Ecology.

Besides Ph.D. programme, the Department has also started researches on Germplasm collections, characterization, conservation and evaluation of some important crops including medicinal and aromatic plants of the region.


Ongoing Research Projects:

  1. Institutional Research Project (AICRP)
    The All India Coordinated Project (AICRP) on “Pigeon Pea” funded by ICAR has been since commenced from 14th Dec, 2009. Scientist in charge Dr. Malini Barthakur Sharma, Assist. Professor, Dept of GPB, SASRD.
  2. Departmental project
    Northeastern Region Coordinated Project on “Impact Assessment of Jhum Cultivation on Native Plant, Soil Microbiota and restoration for sustainable Agro-Ecosystem” has been since technically commenced from January 2013; which has been sanctioned on October 2012, in the department of Genetics and Plant Breeding; Prof Sapu Changkija, (GPB) is the Principal Investigator and Dr Tongpang Longkumer Assistant Professor Deptt. Of Agronomy is the Co-PI.
  3. AICRP on Seed Hub
    Creation of Seed Hubs for increasing indigenous production of Pulses in India” Sponsored by Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare NFSM, Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India and implemented through ICAR IIPR, Kanpur. Sanctioned in November 2016 and commenced from 2017-18. Nodal Officer: Dr. Pankaj Kumar Shah, Assistant Professor, Total outlay: 150.00 lakhs

“Improvement of Socio-Economic condition of the farmers in the Northeastern states particularly for the state of Nagaland."


Thrust Areas:

The faculty of the department has proposed the following long term visions for the upliftment of the department in particular and the society in general. The following mentioned major thrust areas are to be undertaken for the fulfillment of the visions.

  • Biodiversity conservation for sustainable development.
  • Inventorization and documentation of local Germplasm of North East India.
  • Biotechnological approach for crop improvement.
  • Research and Development of high yielding varieties and Hybridisation of some important Agricultural crops.
  • Plan for developing technologies for Under-utilized crops of Nagaland.
  • Intellectual Property Management.
  • Training, research and Development.
