Department of Livestock Production and Management

The Department of Animal Production & Management started in 1978 with undergraduate programme with erstwhile NEHU. However, P.G. programme started in the year 1996 under Nagaland University. This department has different animal Farm Units Viz. Dairy Unit, Poultry Unit, Piggery Unit, Rabbit Unit for instructional and research purpose.

Highlights of Research Activities:

  • Studies on the Production and Reproduction aspect of Broiler Rabbit in Nagaland.
  • Studies on the performance of Vanaraja Bird under the Agro climatic Condition of Nagaland.
  • Effects of season and climatological condition on growth performance and nutrient utilization in growing Mithun (Bos frontalis).
  • Characterization of indigenous Tho-Tho Cattle of Nagaland.
  • Effects of different brooding and post-brooding management system on the performance of broiler chicken.
  • Effect of replacement of maize with Tapioca root (Manihot esculanta) as energy source on the performance of growing pigs.
  • Effects of different housing system on performance and economics of rabbit production.
  • Study on the effect of fermented soybean meal supplementation on the performance of Turkey birds.
  • Studies on cryopreservation of Mithun semen.
  • Studies on status of pig farming in rural areas of Senapati District of Manipur.

Vision:

  • Documentation of available feeds and fodder round in the region.
  • Planning for production of green fodder rond the year.
  • Enrichment of crop residues.
  • Popularization of feeding rumen bypass nutrients.
  • Strengthening collaboration with feed industries having the objectives tailored to the need of feed compounding.
  • Biotechnological approaches in genetic modification of rumen microorganism for efficient utilixation of nutrients and saving environment from pollution and global warming by methane inhibition.
  • Manufacturing of compounded feed using locally available feeds abd fodders for different Livestock and Poultry.
  • Establishment of cryogenic facilities for faster multiplication of progenies particularly milk and meat products.
  • Development of artificial insemination facilities with the livestock keepers.
  • Establishment of meat, milk processing centres for generation of value added products
